The Motobecane is sweet but you might have to get a bigger chainring. It sounds like you'd spin out pretty fast with gear ratio since you live in such a flat area.

Go to some sort of thrift store and buy kid's backpacks or laptop bags. Then take off the straps and clips. It might be cheaper than buying them new.
