Because then the touring bike won't have a saddle.

Agreed about slicks, those are on the short list of upgrades.

Saddle suggestions for MTB with child seat

I'm, in the process of converting my mountain bike into a kid-hauler. I've added a kid seat (a Yepp Maxi) and will be getting a kickstand and probably a basket soon. I went for a ride today, and...

I can't speak to the REI where archfotos has been, but the REIs by me (New Jersey) have serviced my Randonee three times and done a great job each time.

Tubus racks are awesome, and you'll be very happy with them. In terms of carrying water, you have a few options.

Mount bottle cages everywhere you can. Depending on the frame size, most touring...

Well, yes. I think some people like urban touring and some don't. It's a matter of preference, and it's a different set of skills.

I've toured in New York, Boston, Baltimore, DC, Philadelphia,...

I rode from Boston to New York in 2010. I took a week to ride 300+ miles, and to this day that tour is one of my favorite tours - certainly my favorite I've done solo. Here's my journal on Crazyguy...

Ramp-up bike for cyclocross for $500 - is it possible?

A co-worker is interested in getting into triathalons and cyclocross. While he could go out and buy a brand-name cross bike, he very wisely has decided to first find something inexpensive to see if...

How about a Fort Dix ride? That's not too far a drive for any of us. Lots of long, flat riding.

If people want hills, Princeton is a good area for them.

Preferences?

Alastair Reynolds, Pushing Ice. It's a good, near-future SF novel, that may turn into a first-contact story. More politics in it than I expected, though.

NJ Transit - can bikes board trains at low-level platforms?

Is there still a restriction in place disallowing bikes from boarding at low-level platforms? Or has this "rule" been removed, as I've heard?
