For Western Mass you'll be much happier with the triple. Northern New England is filled with steep grades. I've ridden several climbs in Vermont that were in the 22% to 24% range in some sections....

My wife and I had 1994 Trek 5200s that we bought new. We put over 50,000 miles on those bikes, my wife' still had the original wheels....

That's just rediculas, maybe it's ok if you're a racer. No way most people could ride the 20% + grades I ride with a 53/39 unless they like to stand on all the climbs. Note I said "most" people. :)

This is an excellent route. I've ridden most of these roads and I ride many of the roads in the northeastern section at least weekly. Too bad they haven't posted the 100 mile route.
