Congratulations on the start. That's a whole lot better than my first ride...8/10 of a mile and too pooped to pop. Then again I was/am an "uber-clyde". One to two pounds a week is a very realistic...

When I "strip" the chain I take it off the bike...

When I "strip" the chain I take it off the bike and soak/agitate it in a coffee can of (odorless) mineral spirits. Sometimes more than once depending how dirty it is.

A lot of good comments here...+1 on cadence/gearing, interval training, etc. I just wanted to add, keep it fun. Amazing gains can be had in the long run.

Welcome to the Bike Forum, good to here from another 50+/60 couple. My wife and I ride together several times a week, although mostly on paved surfaces. Hope you all enjoy it as much as we do.
