This wouldn't be hard to do at all, just make sure to adjust the chain to match. Even with a clutch derailleur and wide/narrow chainring, I'd be concerned about dropping a chain if it were too long.

msu2001la I would think a 40 on road would be fine for most stuff, especially if you're not using the extremes of your gear range right now. I liked my CX bike with a 42 11-28 for most stuff...

Look for an old touring frame that uses cantilever brakes. The clearances are much more generous. Even an older sport touring frame with long reach brakes will allow for some fairly wide tires.

It's definitely brown and ugly, but I like it anyway. In my basement sits a BUSS frameset, and I don't expect it to be any prettier when it get's built up.

What are you doing with the bike other than foul weather riding? Is it going to go off road at all? Walking in road shoes in the dirt up a silly steep grade is no fun if it comes down to that.
