Before trusting older wheels on a long trip I would want to check spoke tensions all around, repack bearings and adjust cones, and remove tires to inspect tubes and rim strips and rims.

Some large generalizations here that don't fit my idea of "optimal." 23, 25 and 28 are all too harsh for my touring on the wide variety of roads I see. 32 is my minimum and I'd prefer 38 or 42.
