I think it is a Montello. As Lester said, it has no chainstay bridge, and it does have the distinctive webbed bottom bracket. Nice bike.

I have a Merckx that came to me with a wooden dowel in the steerer. It's not a tight fit, but I suppose it would block some dirt. It's also drilled through for the brake.

Mt. Eden coming from Pierce is pretty popular, nice and twisty not unlike Pierce but with one wall in particular that I often see people walking up. Lotsa wineries for the necessary refreshments.
