Any bicycle that doesn't spend all it's time hanging on a garage wall, will need maintenance. Unless you have a Worksman dealer nearby I'd look at whatever brand your LBS (Local Bike Shop) carries....

You really need to look at some cyclocross bikes. A cyclocross is a race where some of the course is off road and some is on road. They have heavier wheels and wider tires for the off road portion...
