The tube has to be very clean and the adhesive/sealer on the patch is sensitive to heat and cold. Heard of a guy using super glue to stick them...

But really for the chain I use a simple 50/50 mix of 10W-30 and Marvel Mystery Oil in an old 3&1 oil can.
