I'd be more afraid of deer than coyote. Coyote are fraidy cats, while deer will jump right into you, and weigh quite a bit. Only thing I worry about with coyotes as if my cats are nearby.

As long as you don't crossthread the lid, it's bombproof. I feel safe tossing it in a pack when full, but most of the time mine rides in a standard water bottle cage.
