I like the suggestion of Sac and everywhere east. I love riding up there but the summer heat could be brutal.

SF East Bay near Walnut Creek is nice since you have East Bay hills and Diablo.

Theres tons of places to ride out there. Depending on where you start Carmel or Monterey, go ride through Pebble beach in the early morning to avoid tour buses and tourists not looking at the road....

I think I can only comment on the cycling aspect of the area as I live nearby cross the bridge. Martinez is pretty centralized area from cycling from great riding in the east bay in the Briones area...

I use a small bag that I put in my jersey pocket that carries 1 tube, 3 co2 cart., co2 pump, patch kit with lever, and a multitool. It's not too bulky.

I'm bummed they don't have Santa Rosa on there for the 2nd straight year. I went to ever SR stage they had before and it was always a great turnout. But I guess they catered to the SoCal towns this...
