I commuted on my Maxxis Holy Rollers this past winter and use them for hardpack dirt trails when it's dry, they are a pretty good option as well.

I prefer Clif Builder Bars or Jelly Belly Energy Beans, in my jersey pockets. I can eat just about anything while riding, just takes a bit of practice.

I also have been lifting longer than I have been riding. IMO, to most effectively combine lifting & riding you should aim for a bull-body/half-body split that hits each body part ~twice per week....

I do 5-8hrs/wk. on the bike (~95-150mi.), normally around 6hrs and 120ish miles a week though, not counting just riding to get around. But I also do weightlifting 4 times a week (around 6-8hrs total).
