PCS-9 looks like a good deal--under $100 on Amazon. Building your own isn't cost effective unless you already have all the tools. Bike stands are cheaper than welders.

Wear sunscreen, light wicking clothing, and a Camelbak. Austin heat is the dry heat so sunscreen and staying hydrated are most important.

I miss Austin--great city. Have a good ride.

I'd get the new crankset. Getting them perfectly straight will be a challenge, and every time you bend metal, there's fatigue (some metals a lot more than others).

Are you talking about cage length? That's usually entirely dependent on chain wrap capacity. Sometimes the largest rear cog is a limiting factor, though.
