The stock stem and handlebar are 27.5 where as 31.8 is more the norm for nicer bars.
Having a wider bar and shorter stem is supposed to make you more stable and upright. I noticed a big difference...

Straight steerer 120mm forks can still be found. I wonder if the recon gold can be rebuilt with spacers to 120mm as well. ..it's a little short of 130mm but may remedy your problem
