    Have you considered an XTRACYCLE? Less weight, less extra rolling resistance, etc. Stabler and faster. Nothing beats that long wheelbase feeling, either....

    A lot of the vontage jr road bikes have steel...

    A lot of the vontage jr road bikes have steel wheels, which does not help braking, either.... but the one we have was $75, and taught our eldest a lot about bike handling.

    My Dahon Espresso (similar to Matrix, too) worked well with a Topeak kiddie seat up until the boys hit 40 lbs or so. And it folds!

    I have one, and love it. You can build it up as a heavyweight hauler -- or just add minimal accessories and keep it light and fast. I rode mine 15 miles yesterday. The long wheelbase is a joy.
