Jyl, those pics you linked look pretty snazzy! If it's even a 10th as good as that it'll still be nicer than the beater I'm riding now. Thanks for the tip about the...

I've also had someone take my bike off a bus rack, and it wasn't nearly as expensive as that carbon fiber one. Stick with the mountain bike for this type of thing.

Found this add on CL, they're asking $85:

Assuming all the parts are in working condition and it's my size, would it be worth the price? I have enough mechanical experience to be comfortable...

This is my rock-solid commuter saved from the dumpster. Heavy as a tank, and about as durable as one too! I've put on fenders and a rear rack since the picture.

If you're a little craftsy and have a sewing machine, you can sew your own bags pretty easy. A nice coat of paste wax makes them reasonably waterproof.

I don't live in an area where snow/slush is an issue much, but it does rain frequently and I ride on hills in very wet weather. I find that my rim brakes don't work as well when wet, but still work...

Glad you've got something you enjoy... that bike looks snazzy to me.

I've gotten great use out of my free 40-year-old clunker bike. It's ugly as sin, but does the job and has yet to break down :)
