You MIGHT also have an issue with the radius of the pad matching the radius of the rim well enough to match up.
That would be somewhat dependent on the width of the brake track.

I'd think you would have had to pick up some debris that jammed things up.

Most RDER's have more than enough travel to allow fitment on various bikes.
I'm using the stock Altus RDER on my hybrid which was converted from 8 to 9 speed, with no problems.

I think you need a new coach-
You're supposed to swap between rings with a 14T difference to rings with a 13T difference?
It seems like a slight change in cassette would make more sense.

Most of us just size the chain Big:Big and the RDER never enters into the equation.

The B screw may be moot if your RDER can't handle the larger cog or have the chain wrap capacity.

You might let us know WHICH RDER you currently have so we have an idea of how low you can go...

The spoke broke at the elbow, so "stronger" wasn't the issue.
One might make the case that the Lasers should be more resistant to that then the Race, since they have a 1.5mm vs 1.8mm "middle". The...

IF you are going to change the shifters, you might consider adding a new cassette & chain and go 9 speed.
9 speed cassettes come in a much wider variety of gear combinations than 8.

The difference between 8 & 9 speed cassettes & shifters isn't much, cost wise.
9 speed would require a new chain, but 9 speed cassettes come in WAY MORE combinations than 8.
    That would be more...

    Longer housing will compress more.
Shorter housing "pieces" allow one to easily "unhook" things for easier cleaning/lube of the inner cable.

For a brief time, I was using an old cottered crank from a 2X5 with my 9 speed cassette & chain.
Purpose was to test the 165mm arms with my bad knee to see if it helped. (it did)

Not sure what you mean by a "brake axle"?

IF the wheel is dished properly, you can install it either way and it will remain centered.
If NOT, it'll be offset to one side or the other by the same...

Any motor oil is going to contain additives which do nothing to lubricate.
    Detergents, Viscosity Index Improvers etc.
A thin gear oil would probably make more sense.

    A 48-36-22 sounds a bit odd?
Sure it's not 48-36-26? The smallest ring is what's important to gauge what the largest desired cog size you want.
22-34 sounds a lot more extreme than 26-34.

I'd strongly suggest getting the spokes properly tensioned before you start riding it.
Having even tension in the spokes will go a long way toward preventing or at least delaying wheel problems....

5mm makes a world of difference to my bad knee!
    175mm 60 RPM & chronic knee pain.
    170mm 80 RPM & occasional knee pain.

160mm 80 RPM and they "feel" too short.
