    Do you know what kind of chain. It could have been a bad initial pin-job. That's why so many prefer "quick-link" type connectors. Hard to make a mistake with them.

    The 'L' screw is not related to the FD pulling the chain off the middle ring.



    Why would you do that ?? it's unrelated. That may make it overshift completely when it does shift.

    The foam is thin and goes between the cranks and the cups. Foam will not affect the crankarms.

    What to you mean "tweaked" your cassette ? Cogs are pretty tough.

    To switch to 10 or 11, you'll need new shifters, cassette, chain. Possibly rear derailleur, maybe freehub body or new wheel ......
