Yep, I've learned that lesson. My current Rockhopper has flat bars, it's not set up as a commuter.

I'm a fan of Specialized's MTBs from that era too, I've got a very similar Rockhopper in dark blue/green. It's wearing mostly Deore LX components that came from a Stumpjumper that didn't fit me. It's...

I used to use my vise as well, the downside is that I need to clear off the clutter on the workbench to make room for a frame to pivot. The bench vise is unbeatable for removing freewheels too.

I'll have to give the SB method a try some day, but I've never had a mishap using a big monkey wrench when it's affixed by a DIY headset press:

Saw one more on the way out of town - an '84 Trek 500 that looked much better than the Univega (didn't get pics) for $120. That one is at La Familia on Curry Ford, somebody go rescue it!

    Deal alert - Orlando, FL

Just a heads up to anyone in Orlando looking for a touring bike project - I saw Univega Gran Tourismo at a pawn shop today. It looks like a 56cm and it needs some love, but not too bad for a...

The Rockhoppers that I used in that configuration were my most successful drop bar MTBs, I'll bet the Stumpjumper is a great rig :thumb:

Thanks Papa Tom, the tires are CST Cyclops (26x2.4 I think.) Not sure if they're still available, but they're really heavy - I traded them out for Schwalbe Big Apples eventually.

Looks great! I ran cruiser bars on my Rockhopper for a while, it took a little effort to get used to the "tiller" steering feel that that bar/stem combo gave me, but it was fun to ride.
