Mostly, my diet looks like this.
Morning commute:2 wheat bread and coconut oil spread, water, recoverite (25-30 miles)
breakfast: oatmeal with coconut oil, egg white spinach scrambled,
I can ride for 1 hour on flats in zone 4, most road races here require that.
It's very different climbing a mountain where you can go back and forth on gears like flats.
AM: 30 miles commute to work
no leg lifting weights till next month
I think some short hills/rollers are not a problem. I climbed Mt. Baldy (6k ft) and i was in zone 4 for 1 hr :) now that's a mountain you can't train for on flats.

PM: plan on 30 mile commute home easy

Actually pros nowadays prefer small bikes. I'm 5 8' and ride a 51cm bike with 100mm stem fits perfect.. i've riden 53 & 54cm and they also good fit.
Ussual group hammerfest on Sat, today commute 23 to work and same home. Tomorrow first CAT3/4 Crit and rest of season just commute unless it rains.

CAT4 upgrade so next week crit will be 3/4 then jump on 4/5 and just commutes and back to the gym.

9 months is too soon. Cycling is very humbling and it took me atleast 4 months to hang on a 30mile, 18mphr av group...I did play rugby & soccer in college so that might have helped. Riding daily...
