    No, it isn't necessary, but it helps to avoid getting cuttings into things where they don't belong. Just a cleaner, safer way of doing it. You don't want the hacksaw to slip and nick the frame.

    I would spring for the newer model frame. Late improvements in Ti frames are significant. In the tubing details, in the welding quality and appearance, in the ride quality. Newer is much better.
