Yes, visuals matter. I like the simple, classic look, not too many logos. Titanium or steel.
Not a fan of carbon, mostly because of the visual aesthetics.
One of my regular riding buddies got one a little over a year ago. He loves it. The bike seems to be holding up, but it hasn't been that long. It's not what you would call a light frame...
Not sure about the rentals, so follow peckma's advice. And yes, BH is a cycling black hole. Be sure to stop at every stop sign because the cops there seem to target cyclists.
BH, however, is...

I think this is all of them...
Budget Bikes in Eagle Rock.
Generally hot. Love Indy Fabs
That has to be one of the longest seatposts ever made... makes the build feel a bit unbalanced.
Hotness.
Posted before. New wheels, fork, a few other changes.

One more thing on the Big Sur section - there's been a lot of construction, so the highway is down to one lane in parts. This means they let northbound traffic through for a while, then let...
I've done the AIDS/Lifecycle ride, which followed the 101 and I've also done HWY 1 from the north though Big Sur and beyond solo on a tour. Coast is much much more scenic, try to do that.

Helen's in Santa Monica.
He's a very good fitter, but I didn't think he was so much better to be worth the premium he charges (I think I paid around $150 for a fitting a few years ago...) You...
Marathon Crash ride was a blast. Super fast ride and the weather was perfect. Finished better than I expected.
I saw little too much carnage, though. A couple of nasty crashes from people...
Doing the crash ride. It starts in my 'hood, so getting to the start is easy. Getting up at 3:30AM, not so easy.
A 32 is right on the limit for a long cage road rear. You might get it to work, might not. A 30 would work fine. If you want 32 or higher, get a 9speed mountain rear.
I don't see why all these people are being naysayers. It's not any worse than other areas of LA/OC. Some traffic, but if you're careful, not a big issue.
You can do PCH and/or the beach paths...
Eating empty calories will make you fat because you have to eat more calories to get enough nutrition. Most wheat-based products are devoid of nutrition, so you're getting only the calories.

I'm in. I need to start climbing again. I expect to be bringing up the rear.
Sounds like a good plan. If the weather is really bad, might want to avoid the Carmel/Big Sur section and head inland to Salinas/Paso Robles, etc. It's usually a bit drier inland.
March is right on the edge of warmth for that region. It's also when they run the Solvang Century.
If you're starting in San Diego, another option would be to take Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner up to San Luis Obispo and ride through wine country, then down to Santa Barbara and back along the coast.
Salsa Down Under rack. Pretty much made for the bike.
I use them almost exclusively. They fit well, good padding, and I really like the wide band around the leg.
Why even smuggle pot anymore? There's plenty of (semi)legal stuff at the corner dispensary.
