    Time to ride more.

Motivation to sell bike junk I don't actually need and finish projects.

It's not an "endurance" sport. It's all out intensity for a short period. That was the biggest adjustment for me coming from spending hours at a stretch on a road bike.

I'm running the center mount Racer Mediums on a similar setup. Really dig em.

The stock fork is fine. I've raced mine for 3 seasons. I had a shop drill the crown all the way through for a fork crown mounted cable hanger (Specialized Tricross). Works great. Zero canti shudder...

    SRAM road hydraulic brake recall

    Another one bites the dust.

I guess I will stick with BB7s until the dust settles.

I wear a cap of some kind under the helmet 10 months out of the year. A cotton cap is usually fine down to 40 or so at which point I switch to an earflap cap. It rarely gets into the 20s here, but if...

Shorty Ultimates are indeed fantastic. Not cheap, but worth it if you have the dough and/or a hookup.

The best and cheapest canti upgrade is a fork crown mounted hanger. Sadly most carbon forks...

I'd say you are no more likely to roll a tubular than you would be in a race, but who wants to mess with a punctured cross tubular in the middle of the woods?

Either spend that $500 on a cheap...

Get the biggest tires that will fit your frame/fork and run them a little softer. It's all about the contact patch.

Just FYI if you're considering any kind of V brakes there's no cable stop here. There are workarounds, but this seems less than ideal to me.

CR720s are pretty well regarded for "cheap" cantis. Play with the setup and swap the pads for Kool Stop Salmon and they will likely be just fine.

That said I'm going to be sampling the CX 8.4...

Good point. The same conditions would make for hotter rotors and brakes more prone to fade, but I guess I would prefer that to a high speed blowout.

Many a roadie has been happy to sit on my wheel as I've done my one way commute on my SS Brompton.

Correct. Same goes for deep sand, mud bogs, etc...

Also, whether something is better to run or ride can vary from lap to lap as traffic thins out or the course gets more chewed up.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand this logic at all. Bikes that get ridden get some scuffs and scrapes and maybe a little rust here and there.

    Exactly.

Also, tubes are a built-in gauge of how much you're using. I've found 3 is perfect for a pair of cross tires.

    Just get the tubes.

Anyway, I race two steel bikes and would not hesitate to go steel again, though I am thinking about a "cheap" built to spec ti SS rig...
