Good for you! I reach 40+ only in an all out sprint, 50 only downhill or with a strong tailwind. On my commute I go at 18-22 kph, 30-33 on a very short downhill, avg about 16-20 kph.

My experience with strictly commuter tires is restricted to my hybrid. Cheap 700x37 CST Traveler, 11,000 kms in 2 yrs and still almost no perceptible tread wear, 4 flats so far. Not bad IMO.

Now seriously, I think it's not good for you to continue riding with that guy. Better go find another group or riding partners, there are many out there.

Not for me. I still use a Giyo (aluminum barrel) that I bought 15 yrs ago for about $40 of today and it still works OK. After 14 yrs of use I had to replace a $0.50 O-Ring, though.
