+1 on garage sales. I've snagged 2 nice mid level roadies off CL for cheap, under $30 cheap, but you have to be lucky or a troll. Flippers in this area scoop the up as soon as they hit it seems like.

I don't know about the urban pedals, but I love my MKS pedals. They're super light, look good, and are serviceable.

I like the look of the escape 3 better but lean more towards the Fuji for price. They are both pretty similar as far as components. Ride both and see which feels better.

Front suspension is unnecessary for the type of riding you'll be doing. Giant is good value for money on most of their lineup. Specialized has the Globe series also that would be good, but I'm not...

You could get wider drop bars. Does your road bike have "dual lever" brake handles? If so you should be able to reach them in all positions just about. Bar ends would help the one hand issue. Good...

It depends on what your drivetrain mech is as to what types of shifters you can use. For instance if you have shimano rd, stay away from SRAM X series thumb shifters. Shimano Alivio (sp?) may work...

Nice another person from the DMV! It's craigslist so offer up $300 if it feels comfortable. I would go look at it and asked what "tuned" means. Does that include new cables and housings, lube and...

+1 on Altus upgrade. I don't know how new Tourney is, but old Tourney is a major P.I.T.A. I am replacing the Tourney components on my wife's bike with Altus because after every ride I have to...

N+1. I almost always pick my road bike over my hybridized mtb. I just enjoy the ride more and feel better riding it. I have both set up for a comfortable ride, but I prefer riding on the hoods and in...

I agree, you need to work on the engine more than the chasis. I had big problems maintaining speed or going any type of distance at first, but after a few months a 14-15mph average over 25-30 miles...

What types of pedals do you guys use? I use Shimano PD-M520 double sided pedals but have been wanting to try the PD-A530/A600s. My flat bar bike I use half clips on at the moment.

You won't. Thankfully it's only happened to me twice. The first time only my wife saw and it was on the first ride with them, the second was just not paying attention and zoning out on my part, but...

I'd go with the Giant, great value there. At $400 you have some options, look at Specialized, and Fuji also. Fuji make some really nice bikes for a good price.

A hybrid with 700x32 or 700x35 tires will handle most crushed stone paths and fire roads no problem. I would look at the Sirrus, but go test ride lots of them in your price range and go with what's...
