Assuming you are already a racer stud and wearing your team kit and just taking it easy after your hard training ride. I normally just say hello and on my way. Sometimes, the female rider didn't even greet you back.
Move the package around, drop in a gel pack for extra size looks, say a few cheesy lines..... WTF is this ?? Hit the damn pedals and blow right by her with all you've got. The only place to chit chat is before starting or at the end.... dude go meet people somewhere else, otherwise ride the rubber off the wheels or make her chase you.
Most of the time I either ride past her, or get dropped by her. Why? Two reasons - I'm concentrating on riding, and more importantly I'm shy.
Is just too superficial for my taste trying to hit on anothe female cyclist either on the road or even during a club ride. That's as cheesy as going to a single bar and meeting another singles.

I did bump into a cutie when I refilled my water bottle during a "rest stop"--police station. She looked "very glad" to see me though and she sure has a very sexy voice.
I've never seen the 'full kit' type guy slow down for anything, much less a girl.
In fact, the only single time I had a flat, three of THAT TYPE blew by me.
It was the mountain biker dudes that stopped and even offered to buy me a beer.
Saturday was a good example of the kind of guy that hit on me after my ride....
He was about 70 and asked to borrow the pump from the trunk of my car.
Ummmmm... If some dood rode up to me and started chit chatting away, seriously, I would mace them or think they were a weirdo or something. Maybe it's best to find another venue to approach a woman. Coming up from behind her while she's riding? I just would not feel comfortable if some dood did that to me.
That's just my 2 cents.

Just be yourself and make direct eye contact. It worked for me on Saturday.

This just happened to me on Friday. A woman cyclist was up ahead, not riding too hard. I was on my 'ride hard and climb as many hills as you can in an hour & 30 minutes' ride. As I got closer, I let her know I was in back so as not to startle her. She was in full-kit (as was I) and as the weather had been threatening and noticing that she had rain gear in her jersey pocket, I remarked that we would most certainly get rained on as I pulled along side to pass. She smiled, and I went on my way.
I ask again, as I did the last time this tread was unraveled, do you really WANT to date a cyclist?

I don't see any trouble with asking questions that would be the same if the other cyclist was male - asking about their bike, favourite local routes, where they're headed, etc... Ok - good point... here's what I might get the nerve up to do... just go up to her after a ride and tell her you know of a great place to get a recovery drink, which we all know is so important and take it from there. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME !! And no... I'm so stinkin' hetero I drive my wife crazy (we have twins, too - a one time event).... anyway I would have so much fun with that dude but I guarantee he'd never hit on me again. But we'd still be friends.... it would be a hilarious ride that day.

IMHO, a club ride is better to get to know someone and chat, since many club rides around here involve food. Safety in a group, and after a few rides in common, I'd be comfortable chatting if we meet on the road. Passing by a few times, and instigating a conversation comes off as creepy to me. Had that happen a couple of times. I know it's hard cause we're on rolling bikes, but it sort of comes off as stalking. But just passing once with a smile and nod never leads to anything.
I wouldn't really consider someone that didn't ride, as far as getting involved with someone. Fitness is important, common interests and spending time on a bike is good. Biking and tennis would be a dream come true!

a good percentage of the girls i see riding in my area pretty-much qualify as goddesses. that makes it a little difficult to say anything more than 'how ya' doin' as you pass or get passed by them.
