Me in Mpls. with a Flying Dutchman
I'm here to find out more about my Flying Dutchman bike. I can't seem to find much about it on google. So here I am. I don't have photos of it just yet. But is late 70s or early 80s and silver and black. I'll have to go check out its frame makeup. I think I bought it for $20 at an estate sale. It's barely used and I couldn' pass it up. It came with a nice pump and red leather toe straps. I was thinking of keeping it geared but I like fixie so much and that's what I originally bought it for. So if anyone knows anything about these bikes...let me know.

is "Flying Dutchman" the manufacturer or the model? Batavus made a Flying Dutchman model bike - the ones that I have seen have been 3-speeds...this is a derailleur bike? can you post a picture?

I'll post a pic later today when I can get a camera.
So this is what I can see on the bike:
Reynolds 531. Pivo stem. Weinmann brakes. ITM special bars. Campy Impero air pump. Avocet saddle. Suntour GVT lux components. TA chainring & cranks. Kristophe toe clips. Lapize red leather toe straps. The stickers say Flying Dutchman and Piccolo. Rims say Super Champion. Wheels say Vredstein Sprint Verderlight.
This bike was barely used, if used at all. There was no wear on the wheels bar tape or toe straps. I Just thought it would be nice to have, the price was right.

sparklebot you should have continued looking, there were 8 pages
of posts about the bikes.
Here is the Gem in all of em (well according to ME).
They were selling the frames for about $75.00 at the time of
the above post (1998) thats why the cheap reference above.

concept, esp. to those of us with a foot in the past. These frames were
apparently made for Jack in Italy to be his "house brand." I believe this all
may have been a loooong time ago, i.e., late 1970's into early 80's and have
been kicking around in their storage since then! The frames are very "shop
worn" with paint scuffs and boogers in the decals to varying degrees: some
awful, some barely scathed. There also is considerable variance in
workmanship, dropouts (Campy, Shimano, Gipiemme or Aquila), seat stay
treatment (capped, sliced & squeezed, etc.) and other detailing. Some of the
frames had obviously been built up as bikes, then disassembled. As someone has
noted, they are not "prepped," and not necessarily aligned to pro bike
standards, but they are not bad. Nothing a good shop cannot correct with time
& a Campy toolkit.
The other oddities is that few of these frames have much in the way of
brazeons, especially down tube shifter bosses. "Band" type shift levers and
stops are getting hard to find! The Flying Dutchman frames also require, in
order to use 700c wheels, a "normal" reach brakeset, of which few are left. No
new campy group brakes are available in this longer style. Only Shimano's
105SC came in this reach (now discontinued.) That is not to say a bunch of
vintage brakes wouldn't work fine and Jack had a bunch of Weinmann centerpulls
for sale too that were intended for these bikes!
Despite these caveats, for a super cheap, vintage style ride, I can't see how
you can beat these frames!
Get them while they last!

I recently had my Flying Dutchman stolen and I wanted to reproduce the decals for another bike. Could someone post some closeups of the decals if there are any Flying Dutchman owners here? Thanks in advance!
