diy cargo bike

hi all! ive been lurking for awhile, but finally have something to share! my new cargo bike! a friend and i put this thing together over the last few weeks and we stoked to have it done and working! its made up of three frames we found wasting away, and was inspired by the super high cost of new cargo bikes. i did the cutting, shaping and design work, while i conviced my friend to weld it. as all we had was a mig machine, we made the most of our situation and simply used it. the welds are a bit funky but they hold are holding up great, and now we know how to mig weld thinish walled tubing! as for the chain steering, it pretty much happend by magic. we had a guide for it in an earlier itteration, but somehow it ended up working perfectly without the guide!
i hope it inspires some more cargo bikes, and if not, i hope its at least interesting to someone else! thanks for letting me share!

all diy cargos deserve more: this bike sure needs a good blasting and a couple rustoleum cans, say dark grey complementing the basket though

haha! that was a long time ago! its funny that it took so long for a reply that the bike has since been painted, modified and put into semi-retirement.

im glad someone thought it was interesting though!

anyone else do some fun non-xtra style cargo bikes?!?! post them up!

been out riding so I did not see any of them. Gret to see peopel enjoying DIY bikes. How is the chain steering on the blue one working? Can you trust it?

the bike was retired for a while simply because i dont have the time or space to use it. ive also decided to build a new one with a lower flatbed height when i have the time to do such a project.

the steering is/was great! it takes a bit to get used to riding a front loader with extended steering, but once you get it it is very easy. i prefer it to xtra style long bike, though it is more difficult to get the front wheel off the ground if needed.

the chain steering was fun and felt very smooth, but would occasionally pop the chain off. while there were never any serious injuries we decided to use a more traditional linkage system, which is on the bike now. in its current state, the bike has a large platform rather than a basket and it has the steering link, otherwise everything else is the same.
