Your Long Distance Events This Summer

I know ... we're most of the way through the season already but I'll still ask .... what long distance events do you have planned this summer? Or what have you already done? Do you, or did you, have any century rides? Double centuries? Brevets? Randonnees? 12 or 24 hour events (road or mtn)? The Furnace Creek 508? The RAAM? The Fireweed 400? A Pactour event?


So far this year I have:

-- completed a Super Randonneur series (200K, 300K, 400K, and 600K)
-- completed 4 other centuries


And I'm aiming to do:

-- the BMB
-- the UMCA 24-hour TT

I've only done one so far this year. Last Saturday, 6/24, I rode the 202 mile Grand Tour here in SoCal, but first time this distance on a fixed gear.

One day I would like to try a fixed gear. I know a lot of Randonneurs who have them and tell me that they are great for developing a good pedal stroke. I know several who do the long distance events with them ... and that always amazes me!! I'm there huffing and puffing up the hills, using every single one of my gears, and there they are cranking away past me and disappearing in the distance!!

My new year's resolution for 2006 was to try a full brevet series, just to see what it was like and see how far I could get. So far, I've completed my 200K, 300K and 400K, and will be doing my 600 in July 8.

Unfortunately, I have to go to New York for work on the week prior to and week of B-M-B, and won't be able to make the event.

I'm trying to psyche myself up for doing the series again next year and aim at riding and completing Paris-Brest-Paris, but I have to admit that I'm a little trepidatious of the training investment for a full season of brevets. I'm looking at randonneuring as a year-on, year-off sort of habit; as I'm afraid that I'd burn out of it if I sink too many hours into it month-after-month or year-after-year. (this might warrant another topic)

Finishing up a SR series. The 600k is next weekend (July 8)
Maybe BMB. GF is pushing me - telling me I can do it.

If I do not do BMB I may do a late fall "mike series" - I need to deliver a vehicle to Cleveland, Ohio. I'll be riding back to Burlington, Vermont, Brevet style - 618 miles according to Google - but I'll probably top 650 by the time I figure out the backroads. Going to try and cover 150 miles a day, so I can get back in under a long weekend. I'll be lightly loaded - probably just bike gear and 1 change of clothes. Going to mooch off a few friends along the way, and hotel it. Not sure if I'll do a full 24 hr cycle. Maybe to start, as a kick off.

-- TOSRV (Bexley-Portsmouth-Bexley) as a 1-day, 220-mile event
-- a host of centuries including several informal 200Ks and a pre-ride of the 400K

On tap for the remainder of the year:
-- 600K (19 hours from now!)
-- RAIN (Ride Across Indiana), 7/15/06, possibly riding it backwards the day before
-- Ohio Randonneurs 1000K
-- another 200K and 300K with the Ohio Randonneurs in October
-- The Texas Time Trials RAAM-qualifier (500 miles; 48-hr. cut-off)
-- a host of local centuries, both organized and just noodling around with friends
-- my B-M-B plans are hanging by a thread
-- other possibilites: the new Metamora 200 in Peroria, IL; UMCA 24-hr. on Labor Day Weekend; could do
Quadzilla at the last minute if a few cards fall in the right order....

I'm just getting into wanting to do some Radonneuring, but I'm aiming to at least finish a couple centuries before the year is up. I doubt that is a too huge of a goal to settle for

So far this year I have:

- two centuries
- two 200k rides (one brevet and one shortened double century)
- four double centuries

I may, just may, have a chance to do my first triple century in the next few weeks. In September and October I have three more double centuries, and perhaps some sort of team action at the 508.

Unfortunately this year I was not able to do another 400k or attempt a 600k.

- 20 centuries (including the brevets and permanents)
- Just finished Ride the Rockies week long tour (Got two centuries out of that by riding "bonus miles")

Plans for the rest of the year:

One more 300K brevet (the last one in our local series)
More centuries (prefer to do about two per month)
No really long rides like BMB (maybe next year)

I did something like this last August, a Massachusetts "495 Tour" basically riding the outer orbit of Boston suburbs down to the Connecticut border, up to the New Hampshire border, east to the sea then back to Boston. Couch surfed with friends, had a few of them ride with me on various legs of the ride (one did the whole trip with me), did my first 200km one-day ride, and had a general blast of a time.

though, admittedly, my route was a lot less ambitious. roughly 300 miles when all was said and done, longest was the 120 from Sutton to Rockport via Groton. slept in for about six hours between each leg; which is definitely luxurious by randoneering standards.

I completed the BP Ms150 from Houston to Austin in April. It has a 109 mile first leg and over 60 the second.
I am riding in the Valero MS150 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi in October. It also has a century on the first leg.

The Audax year runs 1st November to 31st October thus so far:

1000 km brevet last November and another a couple of weeks ago
300 and 400 on fixed in the past couple of months
3 x 200 and 2 x 300 on gears (including a Fleche)
Some centuries (variously tandem, fixed and gears), including one starting at midnight...

Planned this year:
a 600 and a 200 on fixed
some more centuries, 200s and a 300 on gears
perhaps Perth-Albany- Perth 1200 in October (doubtful though)

Finished this year's SR series. Signed up for BMB. So I'll need a bunch of "short" (i.e. century-length) rides to stay in shape for BMB, maybe a double between now and then.

Thanks Mod for this new forum I just discovered today. There's 4 more centuries on my calender for the summer.

As an aside...

I had the pleasure of working as an official during the RAAM qualifier Heart of the South 500 and meeting the RAAM participants and hopeful participants. Tinker Juarez (3rd place, Enduro category at RAAM) was a trip. What a machine. All those folks.

Not the summer but almost summer and still hot and humid is our 33rd Annual Century and 7th Annual Double Century here in Birmingham, September 9th. It's a nice ride.

I'd like to suggest a sticky for upcoming events as in some other forums. Do you folks think that might be warranted given the seeming interest in long distance cycling?

Did the Canada Day Populair in Vancouver (only 139 km). Next up is the halfmoon 200 on the sunshine coast. Then I'll see if I want to try for a 300....

Most of the long distance events are run in what passes for "winter" here -- and for a very good reason.

My first 600k ride is 11 days away. I put together back to back centuries last weekend in an attempt to get myself at least half-ready for it.

- Bordeaux-Paris (630 km but over 3 days)

France is really good for all these big organized rides and permanent randonnées.
Now it's the summer, so no more long distance, but I have 6 weeks of touring starting next monday!!!
