Because we're too 'antipodean' to figure out AIM, Messenger, or any of that other guff, we have our own hovell in cyberspace (yeah, you're reading it) where we talk incessantly about crap that not only makes no sense but also features no mention of Fosters, Outback Steak House, or Crocodiles. Or probably even bikes for that matter.

I dropped 14kg after getting back on the bike for 6 months after a long Winter hiatus last year. I got up to 105kgs and last Summer I was 91. Now I'm 95kgs and get a sore bum after just an hours' riding.

That's what happens when your job is also your hobby, people. Maybe I should've been an accountant like Wattsy?

HDT, shifting the last 10kg seems to be the hardest thing.

Miles, patience, maybe some cross-training so the body has to consume energy differently. Dunno wot the answer is. Maybe ed might be able to provide some clues.

agreed, when i stopped cycling last year for 3 or 4 months cause of my coughing issues, i was back at 88 odd kilos like it was a race and my life depended on it.... after starting base again i was down to around 81 in a matter of weeks. 79 - 78 seems to be standard but i wasnt watching what i was eating at all and on analysis the fit day thingy showed i was consuming way too much fat and not any where near enough carbos, hence the flatness problems i was getting during hard training weeks and also probably leading me to get sick all the time.

I also do upper body weights 2 - 3 times a week to get a bit of variety in and also as a vain attempt to build some muscle to keep Mrs HDT happy....

don't rely on the seppo equivalents of food, use the custom option and enter the nutritional info for anything you eat on a regular basis

way ahead of you there. i have entered most of what i eat into the custom foods. the only things i use the stock measurments for are for salads, veggies, dried fruit and nuts, generally things which i cant find clear information on. the biggest shocker to me on the weekend was how much fat is in quiche , holy moly! i felt like i put on 3 kilos just looking at it!

It's amazing how little you can eat when sitting on your bum in front of a computer, but as soon as you get back on the bike if you don't ramp up the carbs majorly, you die in the arse bigtime.

Actually, quick change of topic (mainly because we're sounding like a pack of women and I don't want to give matagi too much insight into the male psyche) - any of you guys fans of 80's metal? I don't mean ACDC or Metallica either - bands like Kreator, Coronor, Sodom, Entombed, Morbild Angel....that kinda thing.

What annoys me about weight loss is when I do a BMI check. Based on my current weight of 90kg's I'm still consider overweight and verging on obese. WTF, forget about the fact that my resting HR is 60 BPM, I can ride 100+ k's, swim 3+ k's and run 20+ k's. I wonder what egg head made this up?

BMI is a guide only and it is actually pretty crap. It doesn't work on fit, muscular, individuals. It was basically formulated for the "average" person and I hate to break it to you Wattsy, but the average person does not ride 100+ k's, swim 3+ k's and run 20+ k's. So guess what? It ain't gonna work for you.

A better method is to measure percentage body fat. Those scales that claim to measure body fat are not very accurate so use them as a very general guide only. Skin fold thickness measurements are sort of okay but very operator dependent - you basically have to measure in the same spot every time using the same amount of caliper pressure etc, etc. The really accurate way to do it is by immersion but that is not generally available and if anyone is offering it, you can bet it will cost.

In my opinion BMI is a dodgy indicator & not really of any use bar a rough guide for the couch potato. For one thing with muscle weighing more than fat you can be lean & muscled & still have a BMI that indicates you are overweight. It also does not take into account any level of fitness, nor body type etc.

But it makes for easy, simple to calculate stats for shows like ACA etc to quote so their learned viewers can understand.

I had the skin fold done 2 weeks back...reasonably happy with the result...and I'm not saying any more!

FYI, i did a dunk test a few years back at a "sports lab".

Caliper (Jackson&Pollock formula) measured 13%, the dunk and the Durnin&Wormsley calculation were both 18.8%.

I am 6' 0" and was 152.5 lbs (it was in the US, hence the lbs measure) at the time. It was fun to do but it was bloody cold... and the VO2 test was farkin painful.

+1, I'm suffering from this 'geek sydrome'!
When I get in a good training routine, I eat lots and generally well.
If i'm not training regularly (read every 1-2 days) then my appetite just drops off to nothing. Even when I know i'm gonna train/race in maybe 2 days time I cant find the appetite to eat and store food

My normal body weight is about 70-72Kgs, I was 78Kgs when I arrived in Aus and training really hard (gym only - nothing else to do when I was in London ), and had put on the 6-8 KGs in 6 months .
After picking up the road bike, I shot down to an all time low of 67KGs in Dec last year when I was probably as fit as I have been (read still pretty slow, ask Climbo and Jock )

From a 72KG base, I reckon I could add 5Kgs in <3months, lose it in <2months. So after all that...
I just wish I could find a consistant appetite and stop feeling like i'm 'carb' bonking every ride

A good bowlful about 1-2 hours before you hit the road and you will be on fire.

I love my porridge, especially with rhubarb!
Just no appetite if I havent trained....
I can wake at 0600 drive to work and not eat until 1300-1400 without really being that hungry...

Yeah, I get that problem sometimes, but if you are about to go out on a big ride, you need to fuel up.
Under those circumstances, I force myself to eat and yes, that can be difficult.
