Over here in Montgomery Co., Gaithersburg. Favorite training run = G'burg to top of Sugarloaf, to Whites Ferry and back. Don't live on Eastern Shore but camp there a lot - riding the Snow Hill, Public Landing, Berlin/Assateague area. Last visit was completing the Sea Gull Century 10/7. WindAAAAY ride!

bought a road bike to race this past season and
not too pleased with it. More dis satisfied with the morons
running the team than the bike
However, Skyline Drive is more enjoyable now
as I can see more of it
in less time than on a fixed.

Back to riding regularly after a bunch of years of sporadic activity. I used to race offroad but am riding mostly road these days.

Most of my riding is from Loch Raven and to the north and east, with an ocasional out of town century thrown in.

I plan to do some touring next year. If all goes according to plan Skyline drive in the Spring and later the Summer Seatle to San Francisco are likley touring destinations.

Well, since I've been made involuntarily "car-free" due to a drunk driver slamming into my truck while it was parked in front of my house Thursday evening at about 11:15PM, I couldn't meet the bike club for the Saturday morning ride starting at New Freedom, PA at 10am--a 50-something mile ride.

Here's what I did instead:

In Glen Rock, I stopped at the Italian restaurant (right across the road from the York Heritage Trail) for a bowl of hot cream of crab soup w/crackers. It really hit the spot. I grabbed some more Gatorade for the trip back, too. If you ever get a chance to stop there, do so. Their food is great and if you happen to be on a bike, they have a bike rack.

Rode the Tour du Port today and had a blast. First time I've participated in something like that. Wanted to say hello to any Marylanders who also rode today (or didn't!). I'm in Harford County.

As shown below, Sunday's Baltimore Bike Club ride starts at 5th District Elementary School.

Just out of curiosity I decided to see how hard it would be to get to Sunday's ride start from Essex.

Here's the route that I took:

Once I got to Mt. Carmel Rd., I stopped in at Callahan's (corner of Mt. Carmel and Falls Rd.) for a cup of coffee and some cookies (3 chocolate chip, but Roy had 2 "extra" sugar cookies that wouldn't fit into the jar and so he just gave them to me. The coffe and cookies hit the spot after the climbing and battling the winds.

Roy's nephew (didn't get his name, but heard him call the other fellow "Uncle Roy"), apparently the owner of the store, stopped in and we talked about cycling a little bit. I told them that the BBC will have a ride tomorrow and that they -may- get some business from the ride.

Once I finished the coffee and cookies, I stopped over at the school. I went into the parking lot and picked up a stone. I used it to scratch out - I S A I A S - in the parking lot surface just to the right of the green garbage can. Maybe the club will see it tomorrow.

The trip back down Falls Rd was uneventful and quite a bit faster, except for the road crew from B.G.& E. working on some lines and at Falls and Joppa, the lane was blocked off to form only a single lane. Didn't see an apparent reason why other than another utility truck parked on the north bound side.

Just before getting back into Essex it started to sprinkle a little and the winds seem to kick up a touch more. It seems my timing was perfect.

All in all, I had a great ride. It was the first time I attempted riding straight up Falls Rd. It's a bit too far for me to meet the club tomorrow (60 miles roundtrip) and ride the 51 miles on top of that--especially when a lot of the ride is hilly (e.g., Spooks Hill).

It was a great time!

Being car free does put a bit of a damper on doing club rides but I guess whatever does not kill you makes you stronger.
