I'm tempted to bid on it even though I have no need for another mixte. It's too big for my wife and too small for me, anyway.

This isn't exactly a mixte, but it was Schwinn's finest in 1973. I purchased the bare frame a couple of years ago and built it up as original from the headset and seatpost down, with the exception of the pedals and rubber. The pedals are steel Campy instead of the stock alloy-caged version. The tires are still vintage, being the inappropriately named Clement Gentleman 27x1. Oh, and the rims are not correct, as I used a pair of Weinmann Concaves that I had kicking around and those were not available until 1977.

The stem is a 3TTT and the bars are modern alloy, with the finish polished off. The brake levers are blue Dia Compe, sized for smaller hands and the shifters are 2nd-generation Deore XT set to friction mode. Saddle is a Terry.

My wife absolutely loves this bike. She has some joint issues that make riding drop bars painful after a while. The tight, upright riding position that this setup offers feels great to her, visibility is excellent, it's easy to get on and off, and the bike is quite light. Index shifting would be nice, but so is riding an unusual classic. I would have preferred to use period correct bars and controls, but much of these components were what was on hand and the tourist levers of that era can't hold a candle to mountain levers in the safety department. The trickest component is the Campy DT cable stop / pump holder. The most outrageous is the Paramount headbadge that cost me almost as much as I paid for the frameset.

I restored and modernized a '73 Raleigh Sports a few years ago for my wife but it got stolen.
I just recently acquired a new-condition lugged-steel Giant RS920 womens frame and I'm wanting to get that built up.

Here's one I picked up not long ago on CL. With replacement of a Simplex shifter arm and a thorough going through the bike, this Moto is sweet! Check out the RD crash guard, the nice rack, and the chrome front fender! 1979 Moto. Love the mixtes. This smaller size should go quick.

Ok all, here's my first try at restoring/building a bike... It was my wife's christmas present. Thanks to MnHPVA Guy for the the minneapolis craigslist link! Several emails to relatives, an expensive Fedex, and a few months of restoration later...

Sweet! If that's your 1st resto, I'd say you are off to a good start. I was hoping that, since my wife seems to think that 4 bikes (and the rear of our tandems) are all she needs, it would find a good home. Certainly looks like you've provided that.

There is occasionally discussion on the CR list about ethics of "Outing" bikes. So I've never been completely sure doing so was appropriate. Till now!

I don't remember what it looked like originally. Do you have any photos?

Yep, my first. I think it came out really, really nice. A lot of people have made comments about it, especially with the Brooks B18 Ladies saddle.

Yes! Thanks a bunch! Its a real chore to find a nice mixte in general, and a nice small one (<50cm virtual top tube) at that. This one, though not a lightweight by any means (frame and fork are like 9 lbs), has moderately ornate lugs and a fully chromed frame, which is nicer than what I've seen around here...

It was sold to me as a frame and a fork only (I didn't take pictures) so I don't know what it looked like. It does have a random cable stop on the right chainstay. (for a Sturmey-Archer hub perhaps?) The only place I found anything about the Chiorda name was on Sheldon Brown's vintage lightweight guide...

Just found this thread. Here's a resto I've just about wrapped up for my wife. It's a Bridgestone 200 mixte, purchased in somewhat rough condition (a bit dinged, dented, and rusty); I had it powdercoated by a local firm.

Here is a picture of my wife's Gitane Mixte. We purchased it new in 1966, the year after we got married. She hasn't ridden it all that much. I upgraded it some. Replaced the steel rims with alloy, added thumb shifters and lowered the "granny" gear.

A Nishiki Sport. Lower end, but such a nice colour I could not resist. I've got to get rid of the purple water bottle cage though. I have a Novara Strada (donor bike) which also came with a purple water bottle cage. So now I've got two purple water bottle cages. Anyone want one? Yours free for the asking...

G0584 stamped on the right rear dropout. Haven't figured out the year on this one. It's got Dia Compe 500 brakes, Sun Tour AR derailleur, but a Spirt front derailleur. I'll see if I can come up with a better idea soon.

I'm glad I discovered this thread (via the 50+ forum) which I check out from time to time. I was wondeing what type of bike it was that my wife was riding at the time.

Hey, I rode it a few times, too -- it's a fun bike (although to say a little on the heavy side is understatement.)

The mixte, A Peugeot is the second from the left, back when it was seeing some consistent action.

Right now it needs some TLC and a the front derailleur needs to be replaced.

I haven't got any photos yet, but I just picked up a NOS mixte frame from eBay. I probably paid too much for it because it's not anything fancy -- a Puch Pathfinder, Series I, made in Japan (actually the badge says "made for Puch") -- but it's my size, and I'm not sure I have ever run into a NOS mixte frame before. And it is beautiful: black with gold script lettering, a little shop wear and some cracking on the decals, but otherwise glossy and clean and unchipped. It didn't have a fork but the seller shipped it with what looks like a NOS Peugeot fork, also black and a good match (and sorry, Peugeot folks, but I had to take the decals off so it wouldn't clash).

I had a little dream of building this up with either a Nexus or a new Sturmey-Archer hub, but I don't think it's possible in any cost-effective way, so it is going to be a single speed for now. But sadly, it is just too pretty to use the crappy old parts we have in the basement, so it's going to be expensive either way. I will post photos when I can get it out into the light.
