Actually, since someone said this sub-thread is really dead, does anyone else ride from New West to Vancouver or vice versa during the week? Give me something to watch out for and a little company, little friendly motivation.

Where in New West? I commute from Boundary and Marine Drive every day, so if you go along the 37th bike route you'd probably run into me.

I'm riding Breezer mtn bike converted into a commuter.

NO BIKE LANES!

Agreed, I used to be a vancouver cyclist. Everyday, Richmond to 200 Burrard for over two years. 14km one way and 3 Bridges. In 11,000km I was hit once, and pinned between a bus and a parked car once.

I almost never use or used bike lanes including the ones on Burrard St Bridge. Usually they are covered in gravel, glass, holes, and pedestrians moving 25km/hr slower than me. My own personal issue with bike lanes and sidewalks is that they almost ALWAYS intersect traffic before the point the motorist stops, and I am fairly certain that most drivers moving or stopped are not looking for even a slow cyclist to come off a path at 15km/hr+.

In my car (cage) I've spent more time stopped behind one motor vehicle accident in Toronto or Vancouver than all the thousands of cyclists I've safely passed combined.

Vancouver messengers know how to stay alive. Ride fast and take the whole lane if you need to.

I just wish my tax dollars would repair the shoulders of the road too.

I guess technically East Van, though it's a bit of a wasteland at Nanaimo & Kingsway. I commute pretty much daily out to Burnaby, taking me on a lovely stretch of Lougheed highway, then south on . . . uh. That street east of Boundary, that goes right past the train station. ("Sea to Sky" bike trail apparently.)

Look for the guy on the black Bike Friday Tikit. Hard to miss, the wheels are itty bitty.

Living in the West End, cycling to Richmond every day. ~20k each way. Currently riding a stock (except for stem) 2000 Rocky Mountain Thin Air.

I'm currently looking for something to use as a commuter and weekend road riding bike.

I often commute from Port Moody to downtown Vancouver. For kicks I like to ride from Port Moody (near the old city hall) to Belcarra Park or Buntzen Lake.

I have more than one gear; but don't hold that against me.
Commute over the Iron Workers bridge at least three times a week (to the North Shore and back).
OCB is having a Halloween fund-raiser party on Nov. 1st! Be there or be square!

Hey, I volunteer at the Vancouver SPCA shelter Monday and Friday evenings. What bike do you ride? I ride a old Norco Bush Pilot, its green with red decals.

I have a couple: Primary ride is a copper-orange DeVinci Oslo. Secondary rides vary between a DeVinci Lifestyle (hate the name. Love the ride), Bike Friday "Tikit", and a 1979 Raleigh "Ltd."

The new ones in the last couple of years, have front suspension and disk brakes. Mine is just a regular front fork also green. The brakes are V-brakes front and rear. This time of the year, I have a flashing red LED light attached to my seat post and a white one on the handle bar.

Also I was just thinking that your user name was DogsBody and the reason that I am in your neighborhood is that I volunteer with the dogs.

Riding in the urban jungle without suspension is a good thing imo: All shocks do is add weight.
Re: "DogsBody" - I am a WW2 buff. Dogsbody was the call-sign of Sir Douglas "Tin Legs" Bader...
In any case: I love animals; and they love me.
My Dad is a retired Veterinarian (Microbiology/disease reasearch for Canada Agriculture). Not your "run of the Mill" Vet); So I was raised with all kinds of large mammals around.

I live in Burnaby, work in yaletown. I ride back and forth whenever it isn't too yucky outside. A 1985 Miyata 310 is my usual ride.

Anyone here ever go to the midnight rides? Every second thursday, they're great fun.

I'll be visiting there soon... my brother splits his time between Van and Whistler so I'll either be mountain biking or seeing if I can't snag or build up a temporary set of wheels at the Bike Kitchen while I am there to see the sights and then donate it back.
