Was wondering if anyone here is going to be doing the 100K flyer rotorua to taupo on march??? or anyone who have competed before inthis event...
would be much appreciated if they could offer any training tips or advice
and what sort of time would be considered adequate??
anyone training for this even in auckland??

scho047, I have to assume by the lack of responses that the people who have done this ride don't spend any time on the forums. Or they don't want to give away any secrets.
I'm sort of interested in doing it next year so looking forward to a ride report from you after the event.
It was sketchy driving a caravan through the rather odd desert between the two. Wouldn't want to do it on a bike. Oh wait, that's why the missus and I spent a small fortune building that tandem. Hmm. Stop at the Cookie Time cargo plane cafe for tea. I have no advice about riding in NZ, but I can tell you where to get some tucker.
I rode this event in 05 when it used to take in the killa hill in the Waikite valley but missed it last year (new course 06) so can't comment on the new parts but it's a great ride to Taupo from rotorua. The last 10k into taupo can be a bit of a grind as it's slightly uphill to the racecourse but downhill to the finish from there. Broadlands road is pretty flat from reporoa.
As far as time goes it really depends on the individual and if you intend to ride in one of the early bunches or grind it out yourself further down in the field.
I forgot this ride was coming up in march so think I'll have to pencil it in as one of my first rides to do after IM this year.

PartyPat's right, save some energy for the last 10 km. I've done it a few times and normally take around 3hrs and I'm not fast! Be prepared for having lots of bikes around you, unless you're well down the back, there are some pretty big packs. No real big hills to worry about now they've taken Waikite out. Enjoy!

In that case your geography may be a bit screwy. Rotorua is north of Taupo, whereas the Desert Road is south.
Ahhh! It was my 2nd day in NZ. I was very turned around. That is where the military museum and cafe made out of an old cargo plane are, correct?
The Museum is in Waiouru (sp?) the plane is between there and Taihape IIRC.
The road between Rotorua and Taupo is rather more pleasant I think.
It was over 3 years ago, and I drove over 7,500Km between both islands, so I may not recall everything very well.
... and not a lot of riding...

Hi there... i did the race in 3 hrs 35mins... but had a puncture while i was riding.... so a bit disappointing but it was my first one.... many more to come... hehe.. so am just looking forward to the next event..
the course was in a near perfect condition... could not have asked for better course..and hills... well what hills! haha lol... last 5 km was the longest i have ever done tho... (well felt it like that..)

I really enjoy that course being a fast one with minimal hills. Of course, that long slow climb out of Reparoa gets most of us being right at the 85 km mark. It always seems to have a head wind coming down from the hill. I guess thats what will separate those of us 'in the herd' from the elites at the front.
