Most people around ride cruisers with huge tires, it seems. I see a lot of mountain bikes, too, even if there's not all that much call for a lot of gears. Some people ride road bikes, but when my wife asked someone how they keep the bike from beating them up on the roads, they just shrugged and said "I've been thrown a few times.." Something with fat balloon tires seems pretty optimal, be it a monstercross, CX, cruiser, or mtb.

I'm in NOLA too, I think the best bike is a Cycle-cross bike...built for rough road/trail use which is just what the streets are like. Cruisers work well, but they're too slow for getting around, but perfect for the nolasocialride. I ride my road, and my mtn bike around. The thing to watch out for is the streetcar tracks. They love to eat skinny tires and take people out.

    I'm in NOLA.

For newbies cycling in New Orleans I developed several route maps of the city and surrounding areas.

You can Google search "New Orleans bike map" or go to http://www.joeybike.com/ and visit my Maps page. You will also find bicycle-friendly places to eat near some of my routes as well as tons of local and far away bike touring information.

You can also access my Facebook page from the site - focused entirely on the city. The Facebook page is new (launched 12-20-2011) so it currently covers a tiny fraction of the New Orleans Cycling Scene just now, but I am continually working on it.

Bicycle Michael's near the French Quarter is promoting my route maps to enhance their huge rental business, and I have received tons of positive feedback on the maps since their launch February 2011. Locals and visitors find the maps quite useful. The PDF format works on portable devices or you can print out and tile four pages together if you want the "analog" version. The maps are free for all.

Thank you all for the heads-up on the rough street surfaces in New Orleans. We changed the tires on our Cannondale road tandem to our 700 x 32 Pasela Tour Guards before riding with Bob Sunday morning, January 29 on his 20 mile Big Easy Bike Tour. Thank you, Bob for your great presentation of your home town to this pair of tourists from Illinois. We really enjoyed the tour and recommend it to anyone planning a visit to New Orleans.
