Birds Hill is a good time for xc. I was just at a cross race in woodhaven park. lots of road riding to on my fixie, alleycats or even just killing an hour trying not to get hit. what kind of riding do you do?
anyone know any good routes and places to tour in manitoba
up around Lac du Bonnet and Nopoming park should be a nice area for that.

that sales tax elimination is an ok idea, but i would be more excited about it if he decieded to take all the taxes collected off the sale of new bikes and put the money towards developping bike paths or even bike lanes in winnipeg. i think it would encourage people to buy bikes if they saw that the city had visible places for an everyday person commuting to work, or just out for a ride.
Sure would be the cat's ass the if they some of these fu*?@#g potholes soon. Pembina Hwy is in very bad shape in sections. Who was it that wanted to eliminate sales tax on hybrids this election? What a dumb idea, encouraging car use.
I think the PCs want to reduce sales tax on environmentally-friendly vehicles. Anyhow, concur'd about the potholes on Pembina, which stinks as I take it on my daily commute. Can I pin a somewhat bent wheel on the city for the pothole?
As for riding around in the Peg, I like Charleswood and Tuxedo (smooth roads =) ), Harte Trail, Assiniboine Park (both on and off-road), and Portage Avenue (fun and excitement).
But is Nopoming park any good? I'm going there for the long weekend, but the weather doesn't look that happy. 5 lb mud build-up trapped on brakes = not fun times.

I like to ride along Wellington Cres on Sunday when they ban cars from driving on it. If you start near Academy you can do a good loop by riding around ass park and back. There are a few 'hills' along the way, at least as much as we get here...

Sh*t, i lost my blinkie heading south on Pembina right under the big ass sign at Bishop. I stoped to watch some random lady in an Honda Accord drive over it. I picked up my expensive AAA batteries up off the road and peadeled(sp?) home. If you stop there, you can see a wrench mashed into the ashphalt!!!
Pembina is probably the worst street to ride on. It's long, and straight, which makes you want to go fast, but the righthand lane has potholes and pavement faults that would satisfy a downhill mtb cyclist.
I commute from pembina south of the perimeter to portage and main. The stretch of pembina they redid ( between jubilee and grant is sweet - the rest sucks)
I'll also ride out to labarierre park and amisk, and if I am energetic, LaSalle, St. Adolphe or Ste. agathe.
Just found this thread, i live and ride on the roads east of Lac du Bonnet, lots of traffic these days including large trucks, the shoulders are sloped gravel so it takes some nerve to ride a road bike but for the most part people are careful and courteous. As you move up into Nopiming its all loose gravel so its like a shotgun anytime a vehicle passes you. There are some roadside trails suitable for mountain biking but you're competing with fast moving ATV's...the scourge of the universe. Unfortunately Manitoba in general seems way behind in promoting cycling as alternative travel.
McGillivray west of Kenaston has a great paved shoulder all the way to the perimeter where you can stop and eat at Humpties.

Has anyone tried that new path that just opened last year, running through Fort Whyte Centre from Wilkes to McGillivray? Looks good, but it seems weird that it's gateless open access on the north end 24/7 but has a locked gate at McGillivray evenings and nights. We're members there now, so I'll have to ask about it next time we're there. As for fun rides, I don't get to do much riding other than my commute, but two routes I like are South Drive / Crescent Park and one that goes U of M / King's Drive / Cloutier with a loop around King's Park. Sometime I'd like to try St. Mary's to St. Adolphe - looks nice when I drive it.
Cloutier Drive is nice. Around the perimeter is nice too, about 95km though.
I guess the perimeter would be a good ride but you must get passed by a semi or gravel truck about every ten seconds.
Yes, but it has a paved shoulder AND pothole free. A Rare thing around here.
but no trees and on a summer afternoon when the west wind gets going.....
