Hi there, I'm going on holiday to Halifax in late May and I was wondering what sort of riding there is there? I'm mainly into dirt and street/park, but I enjoy light downhill and freeride too. I'd love some info or even to meet up with some riders =D
Have a great time. I lived there for 20 years. I used a cheap mountain bike to commute from the west end to the south end (10Km). IMO the roads in Halifax aren't designed for roadies but mountain bike tires can hold their own. Be careful about the sewer grates. When I was there 5 years ago they were still in-line with the road! Can you believe it? MB tires are okay but a person on road tires could get themselves killed.
Other than commenting on the condition of the city roads, I can't speak to the outer areas although in Halifax, it won't take you long to get there. :-)

Shubinacadie Park over in Dartmouth is good too and has some single track as well. I know there's a popular place in Hali so ask at an LBS. I've never been all that interested in mountain biking, but I know of a few bike shops that sell maps of trails put together by local riders for a couple bucks.
The streets are not the greatest. Lots of pot holes and cracks. We have mild winters so we get plenty of freeze and thaw. I used to think we had more ignorant drivers here than elsewhere, but the short time I've spent at BF tells me they're a universal phenomenon. You do have to watch the grates still and downtown Hali has plenty of hills. Hali is starting to have more bike lanes as well and when the improvements were made to MacDonald bridge they put in a dedicated bike lane! +11 (left side going towards Dartmouth FYI).
It can be a real nice town in the summer. Enjoy your stay and don't believe the locals. Keiths beer sucks
