that's a nice old stable of bikes!
Oh great, now my post makes no sense.
just added a 9 spd chain and cassette to the old steel beast...does the chain look too long? Originally it had a 14-28 6 spd freewheel and 52/40 Chain Rings. I modded to a 13-30 7 spd cassette and 53/39, no problems with the original 6 speed chain. I matched length of the original chain to the new 9-speed chain and actually took one link off, but this is a 12-26 cassette....maybe need to take another 2 links out?
going out for a short trial spin now....gotta love SRAM's orangey goodness

Oh great, now my post makes no sense.
This is how it starts... and then you end up looking for a bike from the 20's and 10's to complete your 20th century collection...
pgoat - The beast is looking good... I always measure chain by wrapping it around the big ring and large cog (sans derailers), add a pair of links, and call it done.
Thanks - I took it out for the ride and it was fine - the SRAM stuff works really nicely together. I tried riding in the big/big and there was plenty of wrap but not excessive to my eye...I'll live with it for awhile and see....I do need to replace the chain on my newer 9 spd bike so I will do the big/big as you mentioned when measuring for that one.

It stopped snowing...

I couldn't possibly run a top tube pad....
at least not for the CX bike which has all it's cables run along the top of the top tube.
Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)

Note to self: Buy twister.
I should get a sticker that phase changes when under 20c...
"do not lick top tube when this sticker is purple"

Faster and smoother but not lighter... new crank, new chain, new cassette, new headset, new (to me) rear d, new pedals, and a much more aggressive and yet very comfortable riding position.
I dug out the old adjustable stem so I could play with the bar position... this set up feels perfect but I am going to have to go on a long ride to be certain.
PS - I even toyed with the idea of going to a 9 speed friction system.
