My 2008 Jamis Aurora car substitute



Outside a boarded up supermarket in Dayville, CT during weekend ride from Providence, RI to Storrs, CT and back.

Swapped out the rickety adjustable stem, after 6 months of experimenting with positions, for a solid chrome one.
Shimano 324 hybrid pedals.
Vittoria Randoneur Hyper 35mm on the rear wheel. This tire is a fantastic upgrade but just barely fits within the frame, you'd better have a really true wheel to use a tire this big on the aurora. My rear wheel was refusing to stay true at first. I had the rear wheel rebuilt with sturdier spokes. The mechanic discovered that it had been built with spokes a little too long on the drive side, and that had f-ed my sh-t all up.

I just got an old Univega road bike that's I dunno... 25+ years old, in pristine condition that will be my grocery store bike so I don't have to freak out with my diamondback.

Hey thanks! The Surly is my first new bike since 1987 or so and I just love the thing. The Raleigh is all orig and was going for scrap from a bike shop! It was on a huge pile of old bikesat a collective bike shop that got sold off to a scrap yard the next day! It has a Sturmey Archer 5 speed (rare) back hub that takes 2 shifters and has a hi-low range. The frame has the 5 speed-wings decal and the front hub is a Sturmey Archer dynamo generator hub and I got every thing working just fine on the bike. You could say I was at the rite place at the rite time 4 years back.

I just got Axiom panniers for it yesterday for grocery shopping and plans to either pick up a Burley Nomad or a Box Yak trailer ( any pros/cons of either?)

So we're not mostly car free yet, but we're ramping up to be by the end of July. Mostly our strategy is to live very locally and use Autoshare.ca if we really, really need a vehicle for some purpose. It's not going to be the easiest ever, we've got two kids, but we're pretty close to everything so it also won't be really difficult.

The Globe should be a good bike for panniers... longer chain stays by the look of it. I have a pair of Axiom LaSalles that I bought about 2 years ago and use for groceries shopping. It seems like a small bag, but there's no problem in loading them with 30+ pounds of food. In fact, I prefer to make multiple trips rather than drag (uphill...) a 50 pound load, which is possible in these bags.

I'm actually looking at the LaSalles for alternate panniers..I got the cutesy and large gatherer shopper panniers. hubby had to adjust them a bit because my heel was hit the bags and driving me nuts but they'll be good for now.

I was also thinking of those Wald Rear Collapsible baskets too...lol...I have a long long wishlist now.

Just because I'm still a bike tech talk novice what do you mean by longer chainstay? My hubby is getting a trek 7.2 on Saturday and he wants a rear rack and possibly panniers too and so I will want to make sure he will be able to do so also

The chainstay is the pipe that goes parallel to the chain and ends with a device to hold your rear wheel. Your Globe is a little longer than most so you shouldn't have a problem with your heel hitting the rear pannier (as long as you position the bag far enough back.)

I thought it was a great deal until someone reminded me he may have been a drug addict. Guy lives in my complex and said it was on his porch for a couple of years collecting dust.
Tires/tubes were dry rotted. I have no idea how to change tires and the like. So---dealer put them on.
Rode her to work today (8.5) miles. She is a MULE! A beast!

Just bought a Cannodale Bad Boy. I love it. Will be used for commuting.

Have an old Schwinn something or other. Its old as can be and the tires are dry rotted. I purchased for TOO MUCh off of this guy that sells constantly out of Miami on Craigslist. Basically he is selling vintage bikes that are crap. Hey, my stupidity. The bike is green and a single speeder. She took me to US1 and back from 441 one day. Hard hard hard. Im hoping to sell her but she needs work.

Here is a couple of pics of the Schwinn Sprint. Would love to sell her just to get back what I paid for the tires. Oh well. Im definitely not the flipping type. Not smart enough! LOL! I see it. I like it. I buy it.
