I just built up a new fixed gear for winter use too... I'll run the slicks until I need the studs.

Just picked up/finished building my Surly Cross Check. It's a hodge-podge, but I'm in love with it. Fixed gear for the winter, albatross handle bars for comfort, Brooks b68 for comfort, etc.

It's to be my winter bike for this season, although this will likely be only one of many incarnations to come. I'm worried the tires will not be enough though, and may have to splurge on a pair of studded tires. But seeing as I don't have an extra wheelset, studded tires will present problems of their own.

Oh, and I live in Boulder Colorado.

The Castro Valley (in single speed mode) is the rain/snow mix bike and the Monocog 29er is the snow/ice bike. The 2.3 inch wide tires have a nice big contact patch for adverse conditions.

That is just the mist from coming through a heavy ground fog. After this picture was taken i added a windshield wiper. (manual)

Cool, have you been riding it when you got hit by a big gust from the side? I would thing that would would get knocked over pretty easy. Also how do you like the leg workout you get from biking into a wind?

This whole design was done to minimize the side profile. (only about 1 square foot from the side). I have ridden on breezy days and I couldn't even tell which way the wind was coming from.

Here is my winter beater. It is a 1997 Rocky Mountain Cardiac bought in the fall of 97 as a winter beater. It has seen 3 complete drivetrain replacements over the years. It has currently been brought up to a Shimano Deore level. This is my first winter with studded tires front and rear. I have always manged to get by without them. For this winter it got a new headset, new cables and housing, new BB, new chain, new cassette, new tires.

A melange of parts, starting with a steel mtb frame. I did build a set of nice wheels, Nokian Extremes on, phil hubs-7spd freewheel, and Sun Ryno Lite rims for the 27mm width, flatten out the tire a bit. The widest tire this frame can accomodate is 2.1" width. Good for most city use. The hitch is for a bike at work A64 trailer, I haven't used it in the winter...yet :-) I have a Son28 dyno hub on my LHT that I really like. I think one would be good for a bike such as this also.

damn, like usual, no pictures of the bike, but as it sits now, it's a lemond etape, with stickers and a rear fender. still has slick tires(waiting on a new fork so i can use my fixed schwinn with cyclocross tires on it) front brake is clogging up with snow, so i'll probably try to get a cross fork.
