If you have a website, blog, photoalbum on Flickr, or some other place where you are telling the stories of your cycletouring adventures, feel free to post them here so we can follow along.

One request though, please post the links in your post, rather than just in your signature line. There are those of us who have the photos and signatures etc. turned off because we are working with slow computers or internet connections. Thanks!

Also feel free to let us know if you've made some recent updates to your site, so we know to go and have a look.

You know how we've got a subforum within the Touring forum where we've got one thread called something like Hosted Travelogues ... which has not been accessed in ages?

Well, what about creating a thread up there called something like "Touring Websites, Blogs, etc."? [Or renaming "Hosted Travelogues" to something like "Touring Websites, Blogs, etc. and Archived Travelogues". Those of us who have websites, blogs, photoalbums in Flickr, etc., where we talk about our tours, could post our links in that thread. That way we could follow along with everyone's tours, or check in now and then to see where so-and-so might be.

I like that idea a lot! I love browsing the journals at CGoaB, but wish there was some other place where I could find lots of other cyclists websites.

edited to add - our site, www.familyonbikes.org - is about us. We are a family currently touring from Alaska to Argentina. We've got a blog in there that we update daily with our experiences from the day. Yes - there are times when we don't have internet access, but we always go back and post those blog entries once we do get access.

Thanks, after our next tour (starting in a couple of weeks) I will look for and invest in a proper site that is much bigger, has a higher hourly data transfer rate, and without those annoing adverts.

PS. On the top corner of the adverts there is a small arrow that can be used to remove the adds.

ah much better never spotted that arrow before,best of luck with the camino route a groop of us did it from bilbayo in 2006 what a fantastic trip lots of mega climbs and beautyful scenery .i would to go back and go off road for a few days ,they say it's a different world up in the far out village's .

Anyone else got any websites, blogs, flickr pages, etc. etc. dedicated totally or in part to cycle touring?

Mine are in my signature line, but I should also have a flickr page up and going again in a few weeks, and I will post it when I do. My website is undergoing some changes as I try to make all the pages look consistent, as well as finishing several brevet stories, and the story of my 2004 Australian tour, which is a bit sketchy right now.

I'm not suggesting adding a subforum ... I agree, I think there are too many ... I'm suggesting using the existing "Hosted Travelogues" subforum within this Touring forum ... or making a thread like this a sticky.

Have you been into the "Hosted Travelogues" subforum lately? I think the last set of travelogues was posted there 2 years ago. IMO, the name of that subforum could be changed from "Hosted Travelogues" to maybe something like, "Touring Websites, Blogs, etc. and Archived Travelogues". Then this thread could be added there.

I'm proposing that we make use of something which exists already ... and which has been lying dormant for 2 years.

Just be aware that some subscribers have chosen the option to turn off sig lines, and others who have any information like that there is not going to be seen. I am one who has chosen the option. It saves on scrolling and other page management, as well as download time for those on dial-up and slow broadband.

As stated the travelogue subforum is well past its use-by date and could be a useful home for such a thread. Alternatively, just sticky a thread like this one.

The option then exists for those with actively maintained websites to use the thread to alert other members of updates -- something which, in my view, most people wouldn't tend to do with their sig lines unless they were particularly fastidious.

You've got a great site Machka, why not have a page like links.html listing all the touring links you can think of or that is submitted, then putting it in your sig line.

What might work better is if the first post in the thread is constantly updated with the newest links. I don't know how long you can edit a posting here in bikeforums. What's going to happen is you are going to have page after page of links & commentary here that few people will have the time to keep flipping through.

Last year, after a ride from SF to LA (after finding a hiker/biker site closed), I wanted a way to share information among bike tourists. So, I created www.biketouringtips.com, which now has almost 900 entries in it about bike touring and countries all over the world. My own biking journals are listed there as well.

That could work, but I think you'll end up with a first post containing 200+ links eventually, which could be as hard and time consuming as flipping through various forum posts. It might be best just to update them in this format, then people can add the ones they like to their favourites, and just click on the last page to get the newer links that come up.

To the surprise of some, there really are people who do browse through the other stickies on this forum. Newbies, mainly, because the expectation is that the main wisdom on this forum might be contained in the stickies section. And the ratio of "lurkers" versus members on BFs at any given time is about 4 to 1, so you won't have a single clue as to actvity on the threads because the numbers of lurkers aren't shown.

By the same token, it could be argued that the touring rigs thread needs heavy editing to delete all the broken or outdated picture links in there. There's a chance the same could happen in this thread, although I suspect people pay to keep their website up and operating and they are long-term, whereas flickr and other personal picture storage locations can change content rapidly.

It's OK to have your website links in your sig lines and expect people to use that. But what if you don't post here for a month, six months, a year?

And I don't list everyone's website that I come across on my Favourites or one my website... I mean... why would I unless it was an exceptional site?

And as to listing in one post... who's going to do the editing on all that? Are you volunteering to do it? Or do you suggest an open-edit thread that everyone can go in and fiddle with (and the nastier ones can put in a rick-roll link or worse)?

I think Raybo (among others) has got the spirit right off -- a brief explanatory of why the site originated (gives the new reader a clue to what he's on about) and a very brief summary of content. Maybe think about that as your guide. It's much more useful, too, than just a bare hyperlink (for people who have just joined or discovered the forum and don't know of your posting history).

At least we have something tangible to work with now.
