Favorite Place or Location in Literature

What is your favorite place or location among the literature you read? Where would you like to live or visit, within the context of the literature though? And what makes it special?

After reading Dr. Zhivago I had a grand desire to visit Varykino, the location of the country home where the Zhivago's and various other characters hid out, or lived simply/simply lived to escape persecution. I can just imagine being surrounded by the Russian winter and fending for your needs among all the beauty. And then farming and homesteading in the warmer months. All while being under the fear of being discovered, and the uncertainties of Russia's future.

I saw an article in a magazine years ago about Ankor Wat in Cambodia- I still haven't made it there, but that will have to be at the top of my list at some point. The ruins out there are breathtaking...

I started reading it when I discovered his site earlier this year, and promised myself to finish it all when I found more time to sit in front of the computer. I haven't yet, but it is still on my list to do. A world with lots of great ideas, and one I wouldn't mind living in!

It really is a good read. I wish something like that were possible, what a great thing it would be to take the best of what we know and get a second chance to build a civilization on an unspoiled Earth.

Murakami's Hard Boiled Wonderland

That would have to be John Berger's Alpine French village from his novel Pigearth from the Into Their Labours trilogy. The tales Berger tells are of peasants living a life that exists close to the earth, of transition and rural isolation.

Yeah, I know... but there was a guy that came in where I was working last week telling me about a presentation they went to given by a bike messenger in Chicago who did Cambodia by bike and rode to Ankor Wat. I'm sure it can be done, but the land mines thing doesn't bode well with me. I'll have to track that dude down and have him tell me how he did it without losing limbs!

I'm shure all paths in tourist areas are well swept, I wouldn't go off for a jungle walk though.
My luck, I'd walk into the underground bunker of the last die-hard Khamir Rouge holdout.
I want to go to these places as I'm a sculptor and these are the greatest relief work done.
The India sites are quite amazing, very Tantric.
I'm suprised with religeous intolerance they were not destroyed.
I guess more this contenent, I would like to go to Chitzen Itza Mexico as I have already done a sculptural work of the site. Long bike ride from Canada- Guess I better get a road bike eh?

The problem is, Ankor Wat is smack dab in the middle of the jungle, and I'm almost sure there aren't any specific bike paths to get there...

Chitzen Itza is nice, though. Been there, done that, moved on to Cancun afterwards. Just be sure to get there first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds. Not only will you have some really sweet pictures, but you won't be waiting in those really long lines either!

Check in the Touring section if you're serious about riding in from Canada- Dave toured from Alaska to South America by bike. It's good stuff to read, and pretty inspiring too.
