Phillips or Raleigh-made Phillips????
Late last summer I bought a Phillips 3-speed English bike at a flea market for $20. I really just wanted it for the "pieces and parts" as I was rebuilding a Raleigh Sprite at the time and it looked pretty similar. After researching the company (I read Sheldon Brown), I became more interested in the bike. My question is, how can I tell if this is a Phillips or a Raleigh-made Phillips? There is no serial number on the frame and the Sturmey-Archer AW hub has no date of it which I find rather curious. Every article I have read says that a date should be stamped on the hub. Sheldon states that Raleigh-made Phillips bikes have the rear fender eyelets directly behind the axle which is the case with this bike. If that's the only requirement, I guess I have answered by own question unless someone out there knows more about this bike than Sheldon or I know. So is this bike (and the hub) a piece of junk which should be placed out at the curb after I finish stripping it of its valuables, or is the bike worth rebuilding? The frame, although the paint job is pretty dinged up, is free of rust and dents. Any opinions?

Do you have any pictures? I think your right though, I would guess it was made by Raleigh. I have a 58 Norman and the eyelet is noticably above the dropout. I am sure there are other ways to tell the difference. My bike has a steel pulley for the hub, I think Raleigh would have put a plastic one on, but I could be wrong. Welcome to the forum by the way.

What does the Phillips head badge look like? I had a pre-Raleigh Phillips (a 1959), and I thought the headbadge was more elaborate than the post-Raleigh badge.

In general, I would prefer a pre-Raleigh to a Raleigh; more interesting, and you're not a slave to old Raleigh parts with their unique threading.

The headbadge is bullet-shaped, black, silver, and red color scheme, a silver lion resting in the prone position against a red background. Arching over the resting lion is the phrase, "RENOWNED THE WORLD OVER" and under the lion "MADE IN ENGLAND", under that "PHILLIPS" (in script), and under that "NOTTINGHAM" with some fancy scrollwork in silver.

So I'm finding out. One of the nuts used to attach the rear wheel to the frame is stripped and, short of buying another old Raleigh, I can't find a replacement locally.

Nottingham=Raleigh Built. Phillips was originally built in Birmingham.
Wheel nuts are 26tpi. Some older bike shops might have a few around. Or they can be ordered from Harris Cyclery or any one of several other internet retailers.

I have a 1955 Philipps Sports step-through ladies waiting for treatment, but it has all the original raised badges, head and rear mudguard, and I will dig it out (from behind about 7 other bikes) and photograph the badges very shortly.

Head-badge.
Muzzy tail-badge.
And a pic of the bike to put it in perspective
Very nice machine just awaiting some attention.
Has 3 speed and front dyno-hub and complete as far as I can see.
