Have you ever seen/built a sporterized Jitensha or Mamachari?
In other words, a bike of this type thats been stripped down to the bare essentials...no fenders, racks or baskets. Etc.
Yes, I regularly stripped down Jitenshas to get the special parts. It's more cheaper to stripped down a bicycle to get parts instead of buying new parts which is expensive. I'll post one bicycle stripped down.Originally Posted by dirty tiger
I spent two months in Cebu winter before last. Besides the Bicycle Taxis I saw a few "Guerrilla Bikers" plying the streets. Mostly they looked like men going to and from laborer jobs. Here's how a mamachari looks after a stripped down. This bike belongs to my friend. He transfered the 3-Speed, Stainless Fenders / Carrier and Nexus Dynamo Hub to his other bike which has alloy frame. The stainless steel rims will soon to follow.

Marfeel - Size 20, single speed, no shinning accessories except handlebar and bell. My service bike for going to groceries and going errands. Something useful during the rainy season. Who knows I may one day decide to give it a new look. I bought this bicycle primarily because it has stainless steel rims which are rarely found in size 20 bicycles. I installed the stainless rims in one of my bicycle. The frackers handlebar was used here to match the plastic basket. The tires are worn out so gum side tires was used as replacement. Usually white side tires are preferables among cyclist of Japanese bicycles.

I got the frame from a Yamaha PAS Electric Bike and had the bottom bracket machined for a regular bicycle. Stainless Steel rims, spokes, fenders & basket were installed with a Nexus 3-Speed Hub and Nexus Dynamo Hub. A 2nd hand baby / child carrier was repainted with new upholstery and safety belt to follow.
Stainless Basket - Medium size which is consired rare in our place.
Alloy Brake
Front Wheel - Stainless Steel rim, with long reflectors, Nexus Dynamo Hub.
Handlebar - with Nexus 3-Speed Shifter and bell.
Headlight - Powered by the Nexus Dynamo Hub.
Bottle Holder - Space used by the battery when it was an electric bike.
Child/Baby Carrier - This carrier was installed a few hours ago. Uphostery & safety belt to follow.

This is one of my favorite threads, these bikes have soul.
Very interesting change from when I was in the Philippines as a kid. Very few bicycles in use in the 1950s and early 60s. The family was in Batangas as my father was manager of the Caltex oil refinery there.
About the only time I saw a group of bikes was when the "Tour of Luzon" came through the area once a year. Other than that very few in use either in Batangas or Manila, at least that I noted. That was soon enough after WW2 that I suspect most prewar bicycles had been confiscated by the Japanese during the occupation and sent to Japan for the steel. I was told it had happened to most pre war cars there.

Coming this April 18, 19, 2009 is the 2nd Aklat Foundation Bicycle Show. Site is the Malabon City Amphitheater. This would be my 3rd bicycle show and again will be handling the entries. I don't sell helmets since they are available at the local bicycle store. Only mountain bike & racer riders buy them. Since our city doesn't have any highways and Jitensha bicycles are used for commuting short distances like market, groceries and schools cyclists just simply wear hats and caps. Sad to say, there isn't any city ordinance or law that requires helmet usage for bicycles. As for me and my son we use helmets during long trips when using our bicycles.
