Wow, the McKenzie Pass and Cougar Mtn shots are fabulous!

Riding McKenzie Pass would be so darn cool!

The Pass road is cleared of snow and open to bikes only by mid-May for a few weeks. I'll post on the PNW forum when I hear the dates and we can plan a group ride. After the road is open to cars it's not quite as casual, but avoid weekends and the road is usually fun to ride. The best ride is from McKenzie Ranger Station, over the pass to Sisters for eats, then back over the pass for an awesome downhill run back to McKenzie River.

BTW, there is a very nice hot spring at the bottom of the pass on the McKenzie River. It's just the thing after the day on the bike.

Are there stats on that climb anywhere? Looks like it would be a good winter-training goal, be able to ride up the pass so early in the season.

The pass is at 5800 ft, from the Mckenzie River it's about 4000 ft of climbing in 16 miles. Availibility depends on snow fall over winter. last year snow was all the way down to gates until June.
This photo is from mid-May and was taken 7 miles from McKenzie River, really low on the road. If we get a light snow year, yes, you can train on the road beyond the gate.

Which way were you going? That looks like hell, to climb.

i was going down in that pic, but i usually go up the other way, e.g. up this hairpin. it's something like 20% grade right there!

descending that part is actually scary, since it's a tight turn, and there's a big drop-off on the other side of the rail.

That is one nasty hill. The first time I did it was at the end of a hilly 80 mile training ride in the Cascade RAMROD training series. It seemed like that climb would never end.
