From the Smith-Appleby house I took Limerock Rd from Smithfield to Lincoln. There is a Limestone quarry there which was of paramount importance to the building of these homes. One important reason that RI had stone enders was because lime was abundant in Lincoln and rare in most of rest of New England. Lime is a key ingredient to create mortar to build these giant chimneys.

The Great Road in Lincoln (it was once part of Smithfield) has many historic houses and cool buildings. It is very busy with traffic on parts. Reminds me of Concord MA in that respect.

After this stop I rode back from Lincoln through North Providence-Providence and back to Cranston. An awesome ride!

About Wilbur Rd through Limerock, did you go west on Wilbur out of Limerock, or come down the hill eastward? 'Cause lemme tell you, going west is a killer hill!

I came east, so down Wilbur. My first time on this road. I thought I was going to burn out my pads on the descent! I did go up Breakheart Hill off Great road on the way home, which is pretty steep.

JJS, Love seeing your ride reports. In my neck of the woods, you'd be hard pressed to find structures over a 100 years old.

Yeah, Wilbur Rd is the road I wrote about a few pages ago, on Bike To Work Friday. I tried a new commute, a road I'd seen a few years ago but couldn't do because of bridge construction. I went up Wilbur. It was not pleasant. I came down it that afternoon and it will probably be part of my regular commute home now.

Scotland, It rains 90% of the time, snows 9% of the time and the sunny one percent was today. Finished an exam this morning and rode through a rather 'bonnie' Scotland this afternoon. Makes a nice change from the usual. Smooth roads, nice views and nearly no cars, and even when there are they are very courteous. Scotland can be nice, sometimes.

To be honest I'm not sure about the green fields but the majority of the fields around there, just not in the photos, are rapeseed.

I had to drive to and from Burlington VT from Providence for business today. A co-worker riding with me said, "Vermont is so boring there is nothing to see but hills and trees." I turned to her and said driving on 89 is like driving on 95. You miss all the details flying by @ 75 mph.

I did a meandering 12 mile loop yesterday after work; gorgeous day. I came upon a block of recently laid pavement. So nice! I wish all the miles could be so smooth.

Another sunny day in Scotland, oh no! only one left.
Across the water is Edinburugh, nice view.Weird, empty country lane and 11 in the morning there was a fire on the edge of a feild. The edges were still alight so we stomped them out but I still find it strange.

I got in a 36 mile ride today on the De Rosa. A sunny day, and warmer at around 72 degrees; kind of windy.

Rode 75% new roads, got a little lost, it all turned out ok. Stayed in RI, was tempted to cross into Uxbridge MA, but had to keep the ride short.

Nothing much but a little 20km (13 mile) shake down ride for the new old bike and my nearly as old legs, I wanted to hit the river valley but was time challenged so will try that tomorrow and did enjoy a little break at the park.

Nice 'new old' bike Sixty-Fiver. Same here, only put in 18 miles this long weekend, today thanks to some cloud cover which kept temps from hitting 100. Feeling a twinge of discomfort in my right hip joint, an old problem coming back. Hmmm.

Over night, the clouds rolled in and the temps dropped for the climb up into the Blue Mountains just East of town. 70 miles on Sunday, most of it in a light rain.


We parked our bikes in the Barn at the Bar M ranch for the night and went upstairs for dinner.


That evening the skies started to clear

On Monday we did 40 miles, Descending from the Bar M Ranch.


Then climbing up Thorn Hollow.


We had stiff breeze when we got to the top of this plateau blowing from right to left, I didn't mind as this guy was busy at work on this field:

We could see the rain moving in across the valley. Stepping up the pace we finished just as it started spitting. Nice weekend. If you ever get the chance to come out west for Memorial Day Weekend, consider doing this very special tour.
