Thanks so much for the response Cycleheimer, you've given me some good ideas! I'm definitely going to throw on a front brake, I just found it odd that the bike never showed to have one. I'm not sure if the frame is high tensile steel, would there be a label that says so ? This is going to be a fun project , thanks again!

Thanks. I only wish the paint looked as rich as the spot under the shifter/frame pump mounting area. Even more, I wish the frame pump had been on the bike. Oh well, still an excellent score for a buck.,,,,BD

I forget. Did you mention what components were on it and if you were keeping them?

Not a bike, but an effective bike rack I pulled from the dumpster. Fits 3 bikes real nice.

1980ish Free Spirit Sunbird fixed * 1996 Mongoose IBOC Zero-G * 1997 KHS Comp * 1999 Diamondback Interval * Olde Western Auto Cruiser.

Oh I'm keeping them, hehe. It's second gen. Dura Ace. Thought to be 1st gen by some, who have never seen the centerpull 1st gen brakes which became Tourney. It has Dura ace FD, brakes, and cranks. The RD is a Crane short cage, because they hadn't made a DA RD
yet. I am looking forward to the first ride.

The wheels that came with it were strange, I must add. Fuji branded clincher single walls, with old logo Campy hubs?? I think they were probably custom built. I do know for sure that they are quite heavy! The original tubular wheels are long gone, and I'd love to recreate them somehow. Thankfully the original DA freewheel is on the rear. It is seriously gummed up, and needs a solvent soak. The Suntour Sprint and Mavic wheels in the before pic will fill in nicely until I can get a set of tubulars going.,,,,BD

Found this Vitus 979 frame out for the trash on my block (along with a god-awful gaspipe frame that's going straight to the local co-op and a small Wald basket that's going on my mixte's rear rack.)

    Vitus9791.jpg

    Vitus9793.jpg

    Vitus9794.jpg

Looks about the right size for my gf, starting to think it'd make a nice little build... hmm, through-frame rear brake cable routing, how can I work that...

...wait, what's up with the seatstay cluster...?

    Vitus9792.jpg

AGGGHH! Stuck seat tube, cracked seatpost binder. Crap! It's pretty much toast, isn't it? Guess I can scavenge the fork and BB. Oh well.

Scrap it is. Or art. At least you get a fork, stem, BB, and HS out of the mix. What bottom bracket is it? Does it still have the BB cable guide?

Nadax Favorit BB, 1.37x24TPI. Detents in the fixed cup are dinged up pretty badly but it's a 6-notcher and 3 look intact. No cable guide.

Soon! I have a Tange Levin CDS headset, Cinelli tan cork wrap, and some Pasela TG's on order. It should be pretty choice. I can already tell the brake levers are going to bug me though. They feel great up top, but I am struggling to reach them in the drops. Maybe I can find a way to block them down a bit. A quarter inch qould work wonders. They have a similar design to Weinmanns, but they don't have the little inset hook on the tips.,,,,BD

lol.. it was at some storage place that was getting rid of a bunch of stuff. i got there at 2:30 and there was like 20 kids bike, one hybrid priced at $200 and this mtb for $20. i asked if there had been a lot of people and the lady said they had already sold more than half of what they originally had.. so i'm sure i missed out on some crazy good bikes lol

i'll either sell the frameset or maybe build up some ghetto singlespeed with it.. though i'm not sure if i have enough brake parts on hand so i might just sell the frameset

I would need a crap 27" front wheel to match the crap rear wheel. The current front wheel is going in the parts pile.
