Inner Inner Tube Powder
I've searched online for what the stuff inside inner tubes is. Some say it's toxic, but in general the info is cluttered with discussions about putting talcum powder on the outside of the inner tube. I want to use inner tubes for recycled bags and other gadgets but I don't wanna poison or asphyxiate myself. What is it, should I wear respiratory protection/ take special care when getting rid of this powder?
thanks
thanks

Where were the tubes made? The authorities in China would never allow anything dangerous to be used on a consumer product. If it looks like talcum powder, it must be talcum powder, right?

Thanks for the replies. So the stuff INSIDE tubes is the same talcum as the kind people (for mythical reasons) put between the tube and the tire? Sometimes the white powder inside the inner tube smells really bad, that's why I was asking.

Any volunteers for a field trip to China to see exactly what that powder is?

it's talc powder. It is used to keep the rubber from sticking to itsself. No real danger as long as you aren't snorting lines of it.

It IS talcum powder, and it's nontoxic. But I've read that it has properties similar to asbestos, so it's not a good idea to inhale it. There was a minor scandal a few years ago about exposing babies to it, but I think the Bush admin, after carefully considering none of the facts, decided there was no cause for alarm.

I think the Bush administration did act. Talc is calcium carbonate. It's also what chalk is made from - like what a teacher uses on a blackboard. Bowing to the pharmaceutical firms who profit from the sales of talcum-powder (and helped finance his campaigns) - Bush fired the schoolteachers and closed many schools.

Maybe this is a little off topic but why are you sniffing the insides of inner tubes?

Talc has been removed from many 'baby powder' products and corn starch is used instead. You have to go to the body and foot powder section to find talc. Breathing small amounts won't kill you but I would take precautions to be on the safe side.
Some religiously believe in using/adding talc powder on their tubes, while others feel there is no benefit or is unnecessary. There's so little on 'new tubes' that it doesn't matter if you wipe it off or not. There's 2 schools of thought in Talc use: 1. with new tires, talc allows the tube to move slightly when being inflated instead of sticking to the tire so the tube stretches/expands evenly and 2. helps prevents pinch flats (which 'might' make sense with lower pressure tires). Whether or not you believe in the reasoning is up to you, there's plenty of 'arguments' either way.

I did a little checking and it seems the powder is the same powder Agent 007 used on his bike.

The powder is inside the tube as well as outside to keep the insides separate. Without it the rubber could stick to itself in the box making the tube useless.
Did I explain that coherently?
