It is interesting to do searches for tandem on Flickr, as several pics per day will be posted of tandems that you otherwise might not ever (you'll also see a lot of skydiving pics, done tandem).
For example, this pic, from Germany. I've not seen this type of tandem, with separate tubes for the stoker's handlebar and captain's saddle. It makes me wonder whether it has rear steering, such as vintage lady first tandems, however, I don't see a mechanism by which to do so.
Here's a couple American custom built tandems with the same idea.
These are usually built for a taller stoker or folks that don't want to ride too close TWOgether( No ifs, ands or Butts). Frameset is a c/f Zona and full tandem is a Bohemian (both are AZ based builders).

As I've noted, interesting tandems get posted on Flickr. Here we have a back-to-back tandem, from a Belgium frame maker Dejonckheere, included in a set from the Bike Motion Benelux show going on this weekend.
I imagine stoker confidence in hurtling backward might be enhanced by the addition of brakes. Maybe this is a track bike, as neither is there a shifter. We can only guess, as the website is devoid of information, and Google searches reveal nothing.
Traveling backwards would certainly improve the view enjoyed by the stoker, obstructed as it is in the conventional arrangement by the captain.

I'm a bit worried about how close the butts of the two riders of that tandem would be. You'd better know the person you're riding with pretty well for that level of intimacy. Today on Flickr another upright back-to-back tandem photo. Looks like they've modified a standard tandem, and I'm not sure the stoker isn't having to pedal backwards.

The 88 was the signature weapon of the Wehrmacht in WWII, so these American soldiers would be unlikely to be mounting one on their tandem.

A Rene Herse tandem. The drive chain extends from the Captain's, not the Stoker's crank. There might have been an advantage to this arrangement, but I can't think of any.
Aha, I see why. The Rene Herse featured one of those new-fangled front derailleurs, which was actuated by a lever. The captain had to reach down to change gears, and the stoker might not have liked it if he had to reach back to her seat tube to do it.

88s were formidable weapons/cannons used as anti-aircraft or as field guns or mounted on tracked vehicles like tanks. Feared by all who faced them.
I happened to be one of them that saw/heard them in action w-a-y back during WWII as a kid in Belgium.
Loved the old Willie and Joe cartoons!
Americans would likely have had a 3.5 bazooka mounted or maybe quad-fifities!

It's called a 'Waltz', as in "one-two-three, one-two-three, one-two-three". Like the Bilenkly Viewpoint which is based on the original James Weaver Counterpoint Opus I - IV semi-recumbents, the Waltz was also originally designed by Weaver and the bikes were fabricated by Dennis Bushnell many moons ago. Bilenky established some type of licensing arrangement with Weaver under which the Viewpoints (and apparently the Waltz) have been produced for quite a long time now. Angletech also licensed and marketed a version of the Counterpoint called the Harmony. Weaver is a professional musican, hence the musically-inspired names for his designs.

A triple tandem caught on Google Street View.
Here's a video about the classic Eroica ride in Italy last year. Amongst several riders profiled, there are two Belgian guys who found out about the new rules requiring all bikes used to be made before 1987 just two weeks before the event. The only bike they could find that fitted the criteria was an old tandem in one of their Dad's basement. It sounded like they struggled with the bike quite a bit, not the best advert for tandem riding, but fun to watch anyway. Here's the YouTube link, the tandem guys start appearing at around the 4:15 mark, and a couple more times afterwards.
