Clipless are great and you can use more of your pedel strolk to get you going, the idea is tho to spin up and get the revolutions on your cadence high 90-120 and you'll be blowing a ton of people away. Goodluck on the clipless.
I was watching the Olympic track cycling, and noticed that they all seemed to have straps around their feet - cant they afford clipless pedals, or is there something in the rules about what sort of pedals you have to use.
clips & straps are much more secure in a sprint. unless you're a gorilla with tree-trunk thighs, there's no chance of pulling out. you still can't get that security with clipless, unless you go with some old-school cinelli M70's.Originally Posted by AndrewP

I use the Shimano SPD959 on my favorite bikes. It's a mountain bike pedal but is so easy and reliable to use. With two sided entry, you don't have to worry when you want to clip in fast!
Mountain bike shoes allow you to walk when you are off the bike too. Road shoes seem like swim fins.

My vote goes to Eggbeaters...light, secure, easy to get in and out since they're 4-sided. They're no good for regular shoes, though, if you ever ride without bike/cleat-specific shoes.

The olympic riders that have clipless pedals are mostly using the old Shimano SPDR pedals, because they allow you to also use straps. The SPDR pedals are known for being very secure, and with double straps, you aren't coming out of that setup! Another option is the track specific speedplay pedals, although I don't have experience with these.
I just bought a new road bike. I am going clipless and mounted up a pair of ATB pedals that I had. What would be a good choice for SPD style road pedals? Is there any advantages to using road pedals over the ATB style?

Straps are the way to go! Doulble straps are better. When clipless came out there were people pulling out alot on the track but over the years yes it has gotten better. The old tried and true way with double straps makes sure you have the power in the right place.

doublestraps. they work with normal toeclip pedals.
The difference between road/mtb clipless pedals is that mtb pedals are designed so that the mtb clipless shoes you get for them are a lot easier to walk in because they have recessed cleats. Road pedals are designed to be used with road shoes which are much stiffer but aren't good for walking. Just go to some websites and check out the difference in design. Pro road racers usually don't unclip untill they finish the race, whereas mtbers might have to unclip/walk/portage various times.
Go with the mtb pedals/shoes. I suggest the Shimano 959's or maybe the new TIMEs or even SPEEDPLAY if you get the old style cleats.
OOh kinda pricey? Or is that about the going rate?
